Kiersten KIERSTEN'S APPROACH

Kiersten's energy is positive, empowering, cheerful and nurturing, and her instruction clear, responsive and creative.

"One of my greatest joys is taking a client on the journey that climbs upward - through the inevitable "ah-ha!" moments that regular Pilates practice offers." -Kiersten

She will introduce you to the principles of alignment and movement, and ensure that your body understands the subtle feeling of very deep muscle connection. Imagine a natural "internal girdle" of musculature surrounding the spine. With sustained engagement, it supports the sturdy "stacking" of the vertebrae, decompresses the vertebrae for a wonderful feeling of "lift." It intricately criss-crosses to allow the torso the ability to flex, extend, rotate and side bend. When we allow our "girdle" to slacken, we are tortured with chronic imbalance which is revealed as an aged appearance, tension, and even great pain and medical squelae. Even committed exercise - but that which is focused on the outer, visible, "mover" muscles - does not provide the support that Pilates exercise, can.

"A few well designed movements, properly performed in a balanced sequence, are worth hours of doing sloppy calisthenics or forced contortion." -Joseph Pilates

She will guide you through highly personalized workouts. She recognizes and respects that specific attention is the essence of Pilates training. There is not "one way" for all bodies to exercise. Emphasis is on individualism (your program will address any injuries, weaknesses, athletic muscle habits or concerns you may have) and quality of movement (not simply choreography).

"The ultimate goal is to enhance your beautiful self." -Kiersten

"As life's journey takes us from caring greatly about our surface to nurturing, stimulating and strengthening our mind, body and spirit, we grow and glow. Beauty becomes a simultaneous inner peace and enthusiasm that radiate." -Kiersten

PERSONAL HISTORY

Growing up, she was a competitive gymnast and a joyful trained dancer. Her eclectic early adult life included travel through six continents, teaching ESL, scientific field work, and writing both fiction and non-fiction. She holds degrees from Skidmore College and the University of Virginia, and is a licensed registered nurse.

She integrated her interests and experiences in movement, health, and teaching into a passion for teaching Pilates. She is certified in Stott Pilates and Powerhouse Pilates and has experience training in a rehabilitative facility where she used the Pilates method therapeutically. She often incorporates bits of Stretch Therapy, Monkey Gym and Core Barre work into her instruction.

Her current energizing endeavors include raising her two spectacular boys, reading fiction and biographies, and participating as a member of the UVA Gymnastics Club (proudly the oldest member ... by far!)
